FRESHWATER REPORT 18-10-10

SOMERSET DAM – Despite the massive amounts of water we’ve had the bass in Somerset have still been actively taking lures in areas around the spit in about 10 – 12 m of water. There have been some big models being taken, up to 54cm to the fork.  The main methods that have been producing are slow rolling soft plastics on ¼ to ½ oz jigheads through the schools.  Squidgy fish in 80 to 100mm sizes in darker colours have been doing the job along with slider grubs.  Bass seem to be more likely on taking a plastic that has a tail that beats or has movement such as berkley gulp grubs, sliders and squidgy fish.  Using blades and ice jigs have also been doing well at the moment just jigging the fish up when the boat is positioned above the fish.

EWEN MADDOCK – The bass fishing has been hit and miss at present but the fish in this dam can be huge and fight like a heavyweight boxer.  Trolling deep divers and jigging blades has been the best method with bass being down deep in 10m+ water.  Land based fisho’s can still take advantage of this fishery with regular catches of fish with the odd large model being caught down near the dam wall and boat ramp.  Blades and lipless crank baits work well in this situation.

RIVERS – Before the rain, reports were that some quality bass and yellowbelly were taken out of Petrie creek using spinner baits.  A short session saw 5 bass up to 49cm and one yellowbelly to 40cm reach the bank.  After this rain and the spawning season ending expect the bass to go right up into the freshwater, so try a few hinterland creeks like, Petrie creek, Stanley river, coochin and coonowrin creeks.

Hope this helps,

Brendan

FISHING REPORT FRIDAY 14-10-10

Sorry customers for the no reports the last 2 weeks. ive been away down south for a family tragedy and im blaming james for not writing one last week when i was away. anyway ive come back to some beautiful weather for fishing. huge seas, thousand knot winds and estuary systems that look like a big m chocolate milk. not good for us fishos.

OFFSHORE – This week has been to unfavorable  for offshore fishing but you can get excited about fishing in close after all the rain and the murk thats out on the reefs. sweetlip, parrot and snapper seem to love scrounging around looking for a feed. sunday afternoon and monday are looking really good. the swell has been forecast to drop out to less than a metre and the wind will be 5-10 knots from the e/se. not bad.

ESTUARY – It doesnt get much better in the river either. very dirty with lots of freshwater. a few fish have been caught down around the river mouths on the incoming tide and at the top of the tide. bream, whiting, tailor and flathead are the species to target. baits and i always like something thats bright, soft plastics or a trolled hardbody. why not put the pots out and get a few muddies and sand crabs which will be on the march afer this rain.

hopefully next week well have a bit more to report. good luck if you get fishing and yes ill defiantly talk to you next week .

FRESHWATER REPORT 13 – 10 – 10

Few reports this week, probably due to some poor weather conditions.  However a few days at SOMERSET DAM produced some quality fish in small 1 to 2 hour sessions.  The largest concentration of fish was at the spit in 9 -12m of water where big schools produced some nice fish up to 49 cm.  Jigging was productive with the weapon of choice being the new Sebile Vibrato, this lure tended to land the larger fish.  Strike pro cyber vibes were also catching lots of fish, keep in mind that these lures work well but the terminal tackle can be unreliable so upgrade the hooks and split rings.  The lure that did most of the damage over the week was the River 2 Sea Glassie Vib 50mm.  The technique was to position the boat in front of the school and let the breeze push us through the fish.  The Glassie Vib was tossed just metres from the boat let sink close to the bottom and then was slowly wound back to the boat with small hops occasionally, the fish were absolutely smashing the lures on the drop.  Pelican point has scattered schools with some larger amounts of fish difficult to find.  Jigging and slow rolling worked well here with fish up to 47cm being landed.  The fish here seemed to be heavier than anywhere else in the dam and all fish gave a good account of themselves.  The best school was found on the south side of the point in 8 – 10m of water which is probably going to be the optimum depth in the coming months.  On a side note, the redclaw are on the menu in a big way at Somerset with plenty being caught by all that are tossing in a pot.  Use opera house pots with rockmelon and put your pots in any depth from 3 – 10m to find the most productive level, we found that the 3 – 6m mark was very kind to us.

Hope this helps,

Brendan

NOOSA JACK OFF 2010

We’ve had the footy grand finals, the Commonwealth Games, and Bathurst , now we have the Melbourne Cup on the 2nd of November. Then the one all of Australia has been waiting for The 2010 Noosa Jackoff.

The JO will be held on the weekend of the 13-14th of November, this will be the third running of the event and on early indications the biggest. The JO is primarily a social get together for like minded anglers with a passion for our Mangrove Jack. Arrangements and organization is kept to the basic and it’s up to everyone to essentially look after there own accommodation, food ect.

The competition will start at 5am sharp on the Saturday morning, at the dirt boat ramp at John’s Landing Camping Ground. I’ll be bringing a 4 burner BBQ and having a free sausage sizzle and coffee for all in the hour before, so 4am on. Bring a brag mat and digital camera to record your catch. A token of some sort will be given out at the start, for each boat, to be placed the photo. Catch and release is strongly encouraged, but not compulsory. The finish and digital photo “weigh-in “of the comp will be at 10am Sunday at the same place as the start. Largest Mangrove Jack by length wins $300 voucher to “Barra jacks Fishing and Outdoor” and receives the honor of getting their name on the Jackoff Perpetual Trophy, which hangs in “Barra Jacks, Kawana” through out the year. If you’re going to start late or finish early, that’s fine, but it’s your responsibility to check in with me prior to starting to fish or leaving the river area. The entire Noosa River and it’s tributaries are open to fish, with the exclusion of “Noosa Waters” behind the lock. The fish must be line caught, lure or bait are acceptable. All those taking part are responsible for their own safety and are expected to behave in a responsible manner. This is intended to be a pleasant, friendly competition and your cooperation in making it such is greatly appreciated.

All those interested in the Noosa Jackoff, please PM or email me your Email address and I’ll return a word document, “Nomination form” that will give all details.
I will have copies of this form on the day for you to sign (to cover my ass). Please also provide a contact method to best contact you if there is a last minute cancellation necessary due to weather ( I will try to avoid this at all costs, a little shower never hurt any one)

$10 entry fee

I will be arriving at John’s Landing on Friday 12th around lunch time and camping there. I envisage most will meet here around meal times and hopefully a campfire at night. Please bring some firewood if you can, as supplies at John’s are very limited. There are some great people coming, and hope to see you there.

Cheers Grant Hislop
