FRESHWATER REPORT FRIDAY 23-12-10

SOMERSET DAM – Before the recent deluge of water on the Sunshine Coast, Somerset Dam was fishing really well with excellent catches of Bass and Yellowbelly.  The area known as Poly Point or Reliable Ridge was the pick of the positions (6 – 10m of water) on the dam with many sessions netting up to and well over 50 fish. In one trip to the dam one boat caught 40 bass and a big yellowbelly, another boat lost count over 50 fish and another boat caught plenty including a 63cm bass.  That is a dirty big bass in anyone’s calculations. While casting, the use of blades (1/4 oz), glassie vibs and soft jackals just hopping and slow rolling across the bottom proved effective.

OFFSHORE – Mackeral everywhere well it seemed that way last friday till monday this week. from noosa in the bay, sunshine reef, coolum reef, out 100m off pt cartwright and down off caloundra there were spotty mackeral everywhere. they were taking small metal slugs in the 15-25g range cast into and around the schools. some of the boys were casting fizzers and poppers and picking them up.

FISHING REPORT FRIDAY DECEMBER 10

OFFSHORE – Still blustery conditions this week so not too many reports but a few got out to the banks and got into some mixed bags of red throat, parrot, sweetlip, squire and cobia. also there has been some mackeral getting around off coolum not in huge numbers but school macks and the odd small spotty were caught.

ESTUARY – In coming tide is the time to fish down towards the river mouths with the clean water meeting the dirty water. most of your bread and butter fish love feeding around the dirty water lines into the cleaner water. mouth of noosa river theres been flathead, bream, whiting, trevally and the odd chopper tailor. mouth of marrochy theres been whiting and trevally. mouth of mooloolah fair few flathead, bream and trevally. also good trevally and bream in the pelican waters canals and muddies are on the march in the upper reaches of the rivers.

till next week……….. ben

FRESHWATER REPORT 10-12-10

SOMERSET DAM – This dam is still fishing consistently with good catches of solid fish being recorded.  The bass schools have now dispersed so finding large concentrations of fish can be more difficult but if you sound around in 5-6m of water off the points scattered throughout the dam you will come across small schools that will give you some fun.  On the plus side the fish are more active and therefore more likely to take a well presented lure such as a blade, soft jackal or icejigs.  The new Rapala Jiggin’ Raps works really well with red and gold being the most successful colours.  The boys at Barra Jacks now stock these lures so get a couple in your tackle box as they are proving well worth the money.
